Mean tear osmolarity in premature infants was within the normal expected range, according to a study.
The prospective study included 25 consecutive premature infants. Mean postconceptual age was 33.5 weeks, and all infants were born at less than 37 weeks. Mean birth weight was 1,159 ± 259 g.
Mean tear osmolarity was 296 ± 19.1 mOsm/L at pre-term, 302.8 ± 18 mOsm/L at term, and 301.1 ± 20.9 mOsm/L at post-term.
In 32% of subjects, tear osmolarity was greater than 308 mOsm/L, and in 16% of subjects, tear osmolarity was greater than 316 mOsm/L.
