Patients who lost two or more lines of corrected distance visual acuity and had grade 4 post-LASIK ectasia were more likely to benefit from implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments, a study found.

Patients classified with grade 1 post-LASIK ectasia and those who have not experienced vision loss should not be candidates for ICRS implantation, the study authors said.

The multicenter, retrospective, consecutive case series analyzed 50 eyes of 32 patients who underwent ICRS implantation to manage post-LASIK ectasia and improve visual acuity and correct spherocylindrical error. The best indications for ICRS implantation were measured over a 12-month follow-up period.

Patients who did not experience vision loss due to post-LASIK ectasia had a mean loss of two lines of corrected distance visual acuity after ICRS implantation (P < .001). Those who lost two or more lines after ectasia experienced a mean gain of 2.89 lines after ICRS implantation (P < .001).
