spectral-domain optical coherence tomography system enabled accurate and repeatable measurements of choroid thickness in emmetropic and myopic eyes, according to a study.

The multicenter study included 85 eyes of 85 patients older than 18 years. Patients were assigned to three groups: emmetropia (30 eyes), mild myopia (24 eyes) and high myopia (31 eyes).

Two graders measured choroid thickness at 500-μm intervals, up to 1,500 μm temporal and nasal to the fovea. Calculations of mean choroid thickness were based on the average of seven locations. Statistical analysis was used to assess choroid thickness at each location, gauge correlations with age, and determine agreement between graders.

Study results showed that mean choroid thickness was 248.2 μm in the emmetropia group, 247 μm in the mild myopia group and 131.5 μm in the high myopia group. The difference in mean thickness between the emmetropia and mild myopia groups was insignificant. Thickness was significantly greater in the emmetropia and mild myopia groups than in the high myopia group.

Choroid thickness was 1.95 μm thinner for each year of advancing age.

Data showed strong agreement between graders, the authors said.
