About 6 weeks ago, I wrote about a young man who suffered iris damage and developed an exotropia after a penetrating injury from a car accident.
I performed a pupilloplasty and strabismus surgery to address both of these issues concurrently.
He came back today for his postop visit with a huge smile on his face, a more normal pupil and straight eyes. He is healing well, and his eye looks great. And from the patient’s perspective, he is back to being his normal self.
This case taught me that while we need to always keep in mind the technical aspects of ophthalmology, there is an emotional and personal component to our surgeries that is sometimes best quantified by the smile on a patient’s face.
