Age, hypertension and renal disease are primary risk factors for ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy, according to a population-based study in Taiwan.
The study authors reviewed 11,753 records from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database of people who took ethambutol; 231 patients newly diagnosed with ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy and 924 controls were included in the analysis.
Age and renal disease were found to be common risk factors for ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy, as had been reported in the past, but the study also determined hypertension was associated with increased risk, which had not regularly been reported.
An association between diabetes and a reduction in risk of ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy was also found.
Duration and dosage of ethambutol did not result in increased risk of ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy.
