Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, awarded 2012 Waring Medal

NEW YORK — Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, was presented the 2012 Waring Medal for his clinical and research work performed in ophthalmology across the world.

“George [Waring] is one of my best friends and a man of tremendous heart, so it is especially gratifying to receive this award named after him,” Alió said here at OSN New York 2012.

Alió, an OSN Europe Edition Board Member, is the co-founder and medical director of the Instituto Oftalmológico de Alicante, the founder of the Jorge Alió Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness, the creator of the concept of microincision cataract surgery, and a pioneer in the area of multifocal, accommodating and toric IOLs, as well as excimer laser refractive surgery and phakic IOLs, according to George O. Waring III, MD.

Alió’s research has centered on lens, refractive and corneal surgery, anterior segment surgery, ocular inflammation and neovascularization, adhesives in ocular surgery, and preventive ophthalmology.

Alió earned his degree in medicine and surgery from Complutense University in Madrid, Spain. He is a professor and the chairman of ophthalmology at Miguel Hernández University in Alicante, Spain, and is the president of Vissum Corporation in Alicante, Spain.

The Waring Medal was established in 2006 to recognize Waring’s leadership in refractive surgery as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Refractive Surgery.

The award consists of a framed medal and $5,000 and is open to all authors published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, independent of age, professional degree and institutional affiliation.
