The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted 510(k) market clearance for the SupraScan 577 laser system, Quantel Medical announced in a news release.

The laser combines 577-nm yellow wavelength, pattern scanning and Iridex MicroPulse tissue-sparing laser emission modes in a single system, according to the release.

The 577 nm yellow wavelength is used for treatment of retinal diseases because of its high absorption in oxyhemoglobin and low absorption in xanthophyll pigments, along with its ability to efficiently transmit through opaque ocular media, the release said.

The SupraScan 577 is the first yellow laser available in the U.S. that offers pattern scanning in both conventional and tissue-sparing MicroPulse modes, according to the release.
