Ready-made spectacles and custom spectacles offered similar levels of visual correction, visual function and patient satisfaction, according to a study.

“This study provides further evidence for the use of [ready-made spectacles] in settings where [customs spectacles] are unavailable or unaffordable, or refractive services are inaccessible to those in need,” the study authors said.

The prospective, randomized clinical trial included 363 adults in India with an average age of 30.4 years and 1 D or more of uncorrected refractive error; 183 patients received ready-made spectacles and 180 patients received custom spectacles.

Investigators used Rasch analysis, a Likert scale and a 16-point patient-reported visual function quality-of-life questionnaire to gauge subjective patient outcomes at baseline and after 1 month.

Rasch scores for visual function quality of life increased from 1.14 logits to 4.37 logits in the ready-made spectacle group and from 1.11 logits to 4.72 logits in the custom spectacle group. Mean patient satisfaction scores increased by 1.83 points in the ready-made spectacle group and 2.04 points in the custom spectacle group. Between-group differences were insignificant.

Visual function quality-of-life scores improved significantly more among patients in the custom spectacle group with astigmatism and anisometropia than among those in the ready-made spectacle group with astigmatism and anisometropia, the authors said.
