Visual and surgical outcomes were comparable for patients who underwent deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty, Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty or Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty, a study found.
The retrospective, comparative case series included 48 consecutive patients who underwent endothelial keratoplasty at a single center; 11 eyes underwent deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty (DLEK), 11 underwent DSEK, and 26 underwent DSAEK.
Mean follow-up was 27.9 months.
At 1 year postop, the researchers observed no significant differences in endothelial cell loss, postoperative complications or visual outcomes between the three groups.
Patients who underwent DLEK were significantly younger than patients who underwent DSEK or DSAEK (P = .024).
“Despite the various evolution and surgical modifications and development in [endothelial keratoplasty] in the past few years, the visual outcomes and postoperative complications between DLEK, DSEK and DSAEK were comparable,” the study authors said.
