Bilateral implantation of a multifocal IOL improved visual acuity, binocular vision and reading speed in adults with mild to moderate anisometropic amblyopia, according to a study.

“Anisometropic amblyopic patients may benefit from bilateral implantation of the multifocal IOL; no unwanted side effects were detected. … The good reading ability and overall level of satisfaction emphasize the potential value of these IOLs in amblyopic patients,” the study authors said.

The comparative case series included 28 eyes of 14 consecutive patients with anisometropic amblyopia who underwent refractive lens exchange to correct hyperopic presbyopia. All patients were implanted bilaterally with a Lentis Mplus (Oculentis) multifocal IOL with a +3 D addition.

No intraoperative complications were reported. Postoperative follow-up was conducted every 3 months after IOL implantation for 12 months.

At final follow-up, improved uncorrected distance visual acuity improved in all eyes, with a mean spherical equivalent of –0.02 ± 0.77 D (P < .05).

In the amblyopic eyes, mean logMAR corrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.37 ± 0.14 preop to 0.21 ± 0.11 postop, and mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.62 ± 0.29 preop to 0.30 ± 0.14 postop.
