Surgeon shares first experiences with intraoperative diagnostic system
H. Burkhard Dick, MD, is the first European surgeon to use the Optiwave Refractive Analysis system from WaveTec Vision, and he shared his experiences with the system at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.
“In the first week alone, ORA has demonstrated its value by helping me avoid a 5 D refractive error in a highly hyperopic patient when the aphakic measurement indicated that we needed to implant a different lens power,” Dick said in a press release.
The system is a Web-based technology that provides real-time guidance on IOL selection, data analysis and feedback during cataract surgery. It takes measurements of the patient’s eye by directing a beam of low-intensity laser light into the eye during surgery. The light reflects off the retina, and sensors analyze the light exiting the eye. The surgeon then has an accurate measurement of the focusing capabilities of the eye, the release said.
Dick has performed more than 28 surgery procedures, using various IOLs and corneal relaxing incisions, with the system since its installation at the Center for Vision Science, Ruhr University Eye Hospital, Bochum, Germany. Erik L. Mertens, MD, FEBO, of Belgium has also started to use the system.
The ORA system uses Talbot-Moiré technology for a broader dynamic range, –5 D to +20 D, than traditional wavefront aberrometers.
