First European results find glaucoma device to be ‘valuable addition’ to surgical treatment
COPENHAGEN, Denmark — The first European results of a minimally invasive glaucoma procedure found that it is an effective IOP-lowering device, with improved results when combined with cataract surgery.
Jens F. Jordan, MD, and colleagues at the University Eye Hospital, Freiburg, Germany, examined the Trabectome (NeoMedix) in 334 eyes of 298 patients with primary or secondary open-angle glaucoma in a prospective study. They presented their results as a poster study at the European Glaucoma Society meeting here.
The researchers found that when the device was combined with cataract surgery, IOP lowering (37%) and reduction of drops (59%) were more than with the device alone, at 30% and 40%, respectively.
“The Trabectome proved to be a suitable device in minimal invasive glaucoma surgery, especially when combined with cataract surgery,” Jordan and colleagues said. “The results of this independent prospective study underline the effectiveness of this method. Further, its minimal invasive approach and the lack of ocular surface alternations make it a valuable addition for glaucoma surgery.”
