Bausch + Lomb launches premium daily disposable contact lens in Europe

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. — Bausch + Lomb has unveiled a premium daily disposable contact lens designed to better mimic the biology of the eye, according to a press release.
The Biotrue ONEday contact lens was launched at the British Contact Lens Association’s Annual Conference. The lens is made of the company’s proprietary HyperGel material, which combines the features of conventional and silicone hydrogels.
The lenses have a 78% water content, the same as the cornea, and offer more oxygen to the eye without the need for silicone, according to the release. The outer surface of the lens is meant to mimic the lipid layer of tear film, keeping the lenses hydrated.
“Patients often report that they have blurred vision at the end of the day or have to blink a few times to clear their vision when they are working on their computer,” Calvin Roberts, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer of Bausch + Lomb, said in the release. “Blurred vision can be caused by contact lenses drying out towards the end of the day, which changes the shape of the contact lens and can distort their clarity of vision.”
The lenses will be available first in Italy and then in the U.K, the release said.
