An asymmetric multifocal IOL proved effective and predictable when implanted with a capsular tension ring, a study found.

The study authors set out to determine whether use of a capsular tension ring would enhance visual and refractive outcomes of the Lentis Mplus LS-312 rotationally asymmetric multifocal IOL (Oculentis).

“Refractive predictability and intermediate visual outcomes with the Lentis Mplus LS-312 IOL improved significantly when implanted in combination with a capsular tension ring,” the study authors said.

The study included 90 eyes of 53 patients ranging in age from 36 to 82 years. Forty-three eyes were implanted with the Lentis Mplus LS-312 IOL without a capsular tension ring; 47 eyes received the IOL accompanied by a tension ring.

Investigators evaluated distance and near visual acuity and refractive outcomes preoperatively and postoperatively. They assessed contrast sensitivity, aberrations and defocus curves postoperatively.

Study results showed appreciable postoperative between-group differences in sphere, spherical equivalent refraction and near addition power (P ≤ .02).

In terms of defocus curve, eyes implanted with the asymmetric multifocal IOL and a capsular tension ring had significantly better intermediate visual acuity than eyes that did not receive a tension ring (P ≤ .05).

Both groups had similar intraocular aberrometry readings, the authors said.
