Hemostatic agent aids patients treated with dacryocystorhinostomy
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A hemostatic agent made from bovine plasma helps patients who are recovering from dacryocystorhinostomy to breathe through the nose and is more comfortable than traditional packing, according to a poster presentation here.
FloSeal (Baxter), a hemostatic agent already being used in cardiac surgery, is "in a position to control arterial bleeding of small vessels," Ralf Ungerechts, MD, said in a poster presentation at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting.
In the study, 50 patients were randomized into two groups, one receiving conventional nose pads and the other receiving FloSeal. Patient satisfaction was significantly higher in the FloSeal group than in the nose pad group.
"In the FloSeal group, the amount of hematoma and swelling were smaller than the other group," the authors said. "Satisfaction of the FloSeal group tended to be higher."
