Toric IOL offers reliable corneal astigmatism management, speaker says

CHICAGO — A toric IOL effectively managed corneal astigmatism in patients undergoing routine cataract surgery, a speaker said here.
“We found this a very easy and effective lens to use … to lower overall astigmatism,” Sunil Shah, MD, FRCOphth, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.
The prospective, observational study analyzed 67 eyes of 60 patients with at least 0.75 D of pre-existing corneal astigmatism who were implanted with the Tecnis toric IOL (Abbott Medical Optics).
Mean patient age was approximately 75 years. Patients were examined at 4 to 8 weeks postop.
For 88% of eyes, mean postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity was 0.15 ± 0.17 logMAR and 20/40 or better, while mean refractive cylinder decreased significantly from –1.91 ± 1.07 D to –0.67 ± 0.54 D. There were no significant changes in keratometric cylinder.
The strong uncorrected distance visual acuity results led to high levels of patient satisfaction, Dr. Shah said.
Out of a highest possible score of 5, patients rated their experience about 4.4, Dr. Shah said. The surgeons rated the software, toric calculator and ease of use at about 4.3.
“There are extremely encouraging results,” Dr. Shah said.
