MONTREAL Wavefront-based ablations with Bausch & Lomb's Zyoptix system are continuing to show improved outcomes over traditional LASIK procedures, according to one refractive surgeon here.
Gordon Balazsi, MD, said in his experience with the Zyoptix system, he has seen a three-fold increase in the number of eyes that have gained one line or more of best corrected visual acuity, compared with patients operated on with the conventional Planoscan system.
Dr. Balazsi said studies show that more than 80% of eyes treated for up to -7 D are achieving 20/20 or better vision with Zyoptix treatment, and better results have been achieved after nomogram adjustment.
We started slow, but very quickly adapted to Zyoptix for more than 80% of our patients. But the beauty is, were getting more people who are achieving 20/16 (45%) and 20/12 (23%), he said.
Dr. Balazsi said data summarizing patients responses to subjective questionnaires indicates patients treated with Zyoptix have fewer problems with night vision, glare or halos.
We're talking about people who say they see better at night than they did before, he said. For Zyoptix, that figure is slightly over 30%. It's really the wow factor, the happiness factor. We really feel that these people are seeing better.
A second advantage Dr. Balazsi stressed is the system's safety, defined as postoperative BCVA divided by preoperative BCVA. Dr. Balazsi said the ratio he saw in his series was 1:16.
That means the average patient has a better BCVA than what they had preoperatively, he said.
