Yellow filter beneficial in mesopic conditions

MADRID, Spain — Yellow filters help increase the brightness and contrast perception in healthy subjects, thereby increasing their potential benefit under mesopic conditions, according to a study here.

María Jesús Pérez Carrasco and colleagues here at Complutense University of Madrid studied the influence of yellow filter without residual reflections on contrast perception and differential light sensitivity under mesopic conditions. The researchers measured contrast sensitivity, low contrast visual acuity and luminance threshold in the central visual field of 38 adult subjects with and without a coated yellow lens under mesopic conditions.

The mean contrast sensitivity was significantly better with the filter at low- and middle-range frequencies. The increase in differential light sensitivity was statistically significant through the yellow filter on the various measured areas as well.

The study is published in Ophthalmic Research.
