PHILADELPHIA — Wills Eye Institute and Thomas Jefferson University have partnered to create the Wills Vision Research Center at Jefferson here, according to a press release.

The new center will "foster regional, national and global collaborations among a diverse group of exceptional clinicians and researchers working to better diagnose, treat and prevent visual diseases," the release said.

Julia A. Haller, MD, OSN Retina/Vitreous Board Member, ophthalmologist in chief at Wills Eye, and professor and chair of the department of ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical College, and A. Sue Menko, PhD, professor at Jefferson Medical College, will direct the center.

"The primary focus of this new initiative is on translational research and studies that will have a major impact on improving vision health," Dr. Haller said in the release.

The center will represent more than 15 scientific disciplines, including ophthalmology, oncology and endocrinology. Current research projects are focused on preventing age-related macular degeneration, understanding the impact of Parkinson's disease on vision and finding new treatments for ocular cancers, according to the release.
