WaveLight Laser Technologie AG has terminated parts of its distribution agreement with Lumenis Ltd. The decision was announced late last week, according to both companies.

Lumenis had an exclusive agreement to market the Lumenis Allegretto Wave excimer laser in the United States, in most major countries of Europe and in China, according to a press release from Lumenis. WaveLight opted to terminate the distribution arrangements for Europe and China. The agreement on U.S. distribution is still being renegotiated, according to both companies.

According to WaveLight, the company “will implement a new sales concept that aims to promote a more independent, focused and intensive approach to developing the relevant sales markets.” Lumenis executives noted they had been evaluating business activities in an effort to improve profitability, and renegotiating the WaveLight deal was a part of that strategy.

In the United States, Lumenis serves as the exclusive sales agent for WaveLight’s Allegretto Wave. In Europe and the rest of the world, Lumenis served as the exclusive distributor.
