Wavelight AG announces 'maturity phase' of RONDO microkeratome
STOCKHOLM, Sweden WaveLight AG launched their RONDO microkeratome as part of what they call the maturity phase of the machine here at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.
Though the microkeratome was already presented in an earlier version, the company explained in a press release that they needed more time than expected to adjust some of the parameters of the machine.
These parameters include a blade shooter designed to prevent blade contamination and to minimize the risk of injuries to handlers, as well as a registration and documentation system designed to store information for each component of the machine by way of a data matrix code scanned by a barcode scanner. An integrated printer allows surgeons to print out data for documentation, according to the company.
During a press conference, company representative Mario Klafke explained that the rationale for launching a new microkeratome was to serve countries where the currently popular femtosecond lasers may not be affordable.
"India, China and Brazil are good markets for this type machine," he told the audience.
