Wavefront LASIK with iris registration more predictable for correcting mixed astigmatism

J Cataract Refract Surg. 2009;35(3):433-437.

Issue: June 25, 2009

Wavefront-guided LASIK with iris registration showed better visual results in treating mixed astigmatism than conventional ablation or wavefront-guided excimer laser surgery with manual iris marking.

“Many laser vision correction companies are moving away from traditional spherocylindrical corrections and toward customized corrections, which also address higher-order wavefront aberrations of the eye,” the study authors said. “As the ablation patterns used in treatments become more complex and more specific to the individual, the importance of precise registration of these patterns on the cornea increases.”

The retrospective, double-masked study included 60 eyes of 30 patients assigned to three groups. Twenty eyes underwent conventional LASIK with manual marking, 20 eyes had wavefront-guided LASIK with manual marking and 20 eyes had wavefront-guided LASIK with iris registration.

Study data showed that 100% of eyes in the LASIK with iris registration group had uncorrected visual acuity of 20/30 or better and 90% of the eyes saw 20/20 or better at 3 months. Eighty percent of eyes in the LASIK with iris registration group had postoperative spherical refraction within ±0.50 D of intended sphere; 100% of the eyes had sphere within 1 D of the target, the authors said.
