SAN DIEGO – Wavefront-guided LASIK gives patients “sharper and higher quality vision” and results in higher patient satisfaction, said Capt. Steve Schallhorn, MD, of the U.S. Navy.

Dr. Schallhorn compared results in 908 patients who underwent conventional LASIK to results in 34 patients who underwent customized LASIK. Six months postoperatively, 88% of the patients who underwent conventional LASIK achieved a visual acuity of 20/20 or better; 97% of those who underwent customized LASIK achieved 20/20 or better at the same follow-up period.

Likewise, 85% of patients who underwent wavefront-guided LASIK achieved 20/16 VA compared to 69% of conventional LASIK patients. None of the wavefront patients reported an increase in halos, whereas 30% in the conventional group did. By 3 months most of the night halo problems abated in the conventional group.

“The most satisfied patients are those who are well-informed and have realistic expectation for what their results are likely to be,” Dr. Schallhorn said.
