Vitreous cavity lavage may be useful for post-vitrectomy diabetic vitreous hemorrhage
Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol. 2009;247(9):1183-1189.
Vitreous cavity lavage by volume homeostatic fluid-fluid exchange may be a viable management strategy to remove bloody content in eyes with post-vitrectomy diabetic vitreous hemorrhage.
According to a retrospective chart review of 88 eyes of 80 patients, vitreous cavity lavage significantly improved visual acuity, and a high fundus clear-up rate was achieved. Vision improved from 2.86 logMAR at baseline to 1.71 logMAR at the last visit. Complete clear-up of bloody content was seen in 84 out of 109 total procedures (77.1%).
Subsequent recurrence of vitreous hemorrhage occurred in 17 of 88 eyes (19.3%). Mean time to recurrence was 92.6 days after vitreous lavage.
