Vitrectomy with gas tamponade fixed retinal macular-hole-related detachments

Vitrectomy combined with gas tamponade was effective for anatomic repair of traumatic macular-hole-related retinal detachments, according to a retrospective study. Vision was improved in almost two-thirds of eyes in the study.

Yen-Po Chen, MD and colleagues at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan reported their results with the procedure in eight eyes of eight patients in the August issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology.

All eight eyes with traumatic macular-hole-related retinal detachment that underwent the combined treatment, according to the study. The study authors evaluated the anatomic reattachment of the retina, closure of the traumatic macular hole and visual outcome.

Retinal re-attachment was achieved in seven eyes, and the macular hole was closed in 100% of the eyes. Visual acuity was improved in 62.5% of the eyes, while three eyes demonstrated no change.
