Vitamin E protection against UV-induced cataract seen in animal study

Vitamin E may protect the natural lens from ultraviolet-B-induced cataract, a Swedish study in rats suggests.
Marcelo N. Ayala and Per G. Söderberg at St. Erik’s Hospital in Stockholm investigated the effect of vitamin E on UV-B-induced cataract using two groups of rats; one group served as controls, while the other was fed vitamin E. Both groups were exposed to UV-B radiation.
Lenses in the group that took vitamin E developed slight opacities, but lenses in the control group developed nuclear cataracts. Forward light scattering in the lenses of the control group was higher than in the vitamin E group, the researchers found.
The study is published in Ophthalmic Research.
