Visx reported net income of $4.1 million on revenues of $32 million for the second quarter of 2003, compared with net income of $6 million on revenues of $37 million for the comparable period in 2002.
CustomVue, the companys customized wavefront laser system for the correction of myopia and astigmatism, exceeded expectations for the quarter, according to a Visx earnings release. As a result, the companys licensing revenue was higher than expected and offset international laser system sales that had weakened because of political tensions and SARS-related issues in the Asia-Pacific region, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company reported.
Visx has also announced that Doug Post has been appointed its president and chief operating officer. Mr. Post was formerly the companys executive vice president, operations, and oversaw the launch of CustomVue.
