Visx CustomVue sales drive strong third quarter earnings

Visx Inc. reports that strong sales of its CustomVue LASIK system drove a 51% increase in license and other revenues for the third quarter of 2003.

This quarter was the first full quarter the CustomVue system was available, Visx noted in its earnings release, and the product generated 39% of the company’s $23.5 million in licensing revenue.

“Enthusiasm to adopt the CustomVue procedure is strong,” said Liz Davila, Visx chairman and chief executive officer, in the release. “We reported a record 145 WaveScan system sales in the quarter. Procedure volume was up over the second quarter.”

According to the company, revenues totaled $39.3 million for the quarter, a 28% increase from the $30.6 million reported during the same quarter 1 year ago. The company noted that net income was in line with its guidance for the quarter. However, it was impacted by a nonrecurring charge of $2.3 million associated with an accounts receivable balance with DVI Inc., a financing company that has filed for bankruptcy protection, the earnings release noted.
