Visual cortex training may improve vision after refractive surgery

WESTON, Fla. — A visual cortex training program given to patients after LASIK or premium IOL surgery has resulted in an improvement in vision in preliminary studies, according to a speaker here.

At the International Congress on Surface Ablation, Femto-Lasers and Cross-Linking, George O. Waring IV, MD, showed results of two prospective multicenter studies conducted on post-LASIK and post-premium IOL patients who were given visual cortex training with the RevitalVision computer-based program. For both LASIK and premium IOL surgery patients, there was an improvement in vision compared with controls.

In the LASIK group, there was an improvement of uncorrected visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Patients with a worse than 20/20 visual outcome showed a greater visual improvement than those at 20/20 postop, suggesting a cortical limit to patient improvement, Dr. Waring said.

In a study of implantation of five different premium IOLs followed by cortical training, patients also showed an improvement in visual acuity as well as contrast sensitivity.

"I believe cortical training represents a new paradigm in vision correction," Dr. Waring said. "Visual cortex treatments are a safe, effective way to improve visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in post-refractive surgery eyes."
