MONROVIA, Calif. — A toric posterior chamber phakic IOL has been granted marketing approval by Canadian authorities, the device’s maker said in a press release.

STAAR Surgical said its Visian Toric lens is “the first lens to be approved to correct both nearsightedness and astigmatism in a single procedure.”

The non-toric version of the lens, the Visian ICL, is approved for marketing in about 40 countries and has been implanted in 40,000 eyes worldwide, the STAAR press release said. The lens has not yet received marketing approval in the United States.
