Simultaneous surgery on the horizontal and superior oblique muscles can achieve high surgical success rates and restore binocular function in patients with A-pattern horizontal strabismus, according to a study.
Se Youp Lee, MD, and Arthur Rosenbaum, MD, at the Jules Stein Eye Institute retrospectively analyzed 20 patients with superior oblique overaction-associated A-pattern strabismus. Twelve patients had exotropia and eight had esotropia. None had had previous strabismus surgery. All underwent simultaneous surgery on the horizontal and superior oblique muscles.
Successful results at final follow-up were seen in 60% of patients. No significant differences were found between the exotropia and esotropia patients in preoperative and postoperative horizontal deviations in the primary position, A-pattern collapse or success rate.
The study is published in the August issue of Journal of AAPOS.
