Uveitic cases with ECCE, posterior chamber IOL implantation show successful long-term visual results
VIENNA, Austria While posterior capsular opacification and macular abnormalities were prevalent in uveitis patients who underwent extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber IOL implantation, after a mean follow-up of about 9 years, visual results remained good, a study found.
"Patients with uveitis who are treated with ECCE with [posterior chamber] IOL implantation may have successful visual results in long-term follow-up despite the prevalence of [posterior capsule opacification] or macular abnormalities," Cyres K. Mehta, MS, FASCRS, said in a study with colleagues.
The study, presented in a poster at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, examined 567 eyes of 477 patients who underwent ECCE and posterior chamber IOL implantation at Bay View Clinic, Mumbai, India, and The Mehta International Eye Institute, Mumbai, India.
Mean follow-up was 111.4 months. At that time, 89% of eyes had "visual acuity improvement compared with preoperative levels."
"Average change in visual acuity for all eyes was an improvement of 6.1 Snellen lines; 66% of eyes were 20/40 or better. The prevalence of cystoid macular edema, epiretinal membrane and [PCO] were 54%, 54% and 59%, respectively," Dr. Mehta and colleagues said.
