PHILADELPHIA — More than half of the patients who present with uveal metastasis from lung cancer had no known history of the disease and the majority died within a year of presentation, said one ophthalmologist speaking here.

“In half our patients, uveal metastasis was the earliest manifestation of lung cancer,” Arman Mashayekhi, MD, told attendees at the Wills Eye Hospital meeting.

In noncomparative cases series performed at Wills Eye Hospital, Dr. Mashayekhi and colleagues set out to evaluate the clinical features and treatment outcomes of uveal metastasis from lung cancer.

The researchers looked at 150 eyes of 124 patients with uveal metastasis from lung cancer and found that half had a known history of lung cancer and half did not, Dr. Mashayekhi said. He said that the mean interval between diagnosis of lung cancer and metastasis was about 2 years and that 71% died within a year of diagnosis.

Of the cases, 80% were unilateral and 20% were bilateral, Dr. Mashayekhi said. He added 21% of eyes contained more than one metastatic focus.
