The Lifestyles session at Hawaiian Eye 2011 will ask leaders in the field of ophthalmology to share their personal stories from everyday practice to inspire and motivate attendees and get them ready for a positive, productive meeting.

“I’ve selected each of these speakers because of their reputation and their sense of humor,” session moderator Spencer P. Thornton, MD, FACS, said. “They can take an ordinary situation and turn it so that you can see the fun that can be a part of it.”

The theme of the Lifestyles session is “Laughter: The Best Medicine” and will focus on spinning the hardships faced in 2010 in a positive way. Done solely for entertainment, the Lifestyles session is traditionally the best-attended session during the Hawaiian Eye meeting.

“The purpose of the Lifestyles session is to set the tone for the week. We want to take the terrible economic and business outlook of this year and counteract that through laughter. If we can laugh during times of stress, it makes us stronger,” Dr. Thornton said.

The session will start at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday and will feature Jack T. Holladay, MD, MSEE, FACS, who will be presenting “How to Survive and Laugh About It.” Dr. Holladay summarized his presentation, saying: “Frozen for 20 minutes with no heartbeat, in a coma for 8 days and still kickin’ … just not quite as high. Live every day as if it were your last and spend more time with those you love.”

Steve Dewey, MD, will be presenting “Humor in Daily Practice,” and Uday Devgan, MD, FACS, will be presenting “A Day in the Life,” which will focus on a day in the life of an ophthalmologist — the good, the bad and the funny. “Ophthalmologists are used to dealing with the aqueous humor, or sometimes the vitreous humor, but now it’s time to focus on the humor of life,” Dr. Devgan said.

Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, who will be presenting “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Becoming an Ophthalmologist,” said that his presentation will discuss his road into the profession. “I plan to explain many of the personal experiences that are so strange they could only be true that led me into a career in ophthalmology,” Dr. Donnenfeld said.

William I. Bond, MD, FACS, will be presenting a talk titled “Observations on Work,” Marguerite B. McDonald, MD, FACS, will be presenting “I Am Not as Crazy as I Look,” James Mazzo will be presenting “Humor from the Corner Office,” and Bryan G. Crum, MD, will be talking about “Working Without a Net.”

Physicians are encouraged to participate and bring their family members to share the experience.

“We want you to bring your whole family so they can see what you’re going to be doing during the week and who the leaders of this meeting are,” Dr. Thornton said. “If the people who are leading us can find something funny to share, then that gives us all the feeling that it’s not as bad as we think and we’re going to come through this.”– by Stephanie Vasta
