Performing electrolysis with an ultra-fine needle to treat trichiasis resulted in a satisfactory result in 66.6% of patients after the first treatment, a study found.

In addition, the study found that the procedure was well-tolerated with limited complications. Two weeks after the procedure, all eyelids in the study were healed without scarring.

"Electrolysis treatment by using ultra-fine (55-µm thickness) needle is an effective and safe method for treatment of trichiasis with many advantages over other recognized modalities of therapy," the study authors said.

The study was a review of medical records of 24 lids of 24 patients. All patients underwent electrolysis for trichiasis, administered by one surgeon between 2006 and 2008. Average subject age was 59.2 years; there were 13 female patients.

Satisfactory results were achieved if trichiasis did not recur at least 6 months after an electrolysis procedure. Eight patients had unsatisfactory results, and of those, five responded well after one additional electrolysis treatment and three responded well following two electrolyses to the recurrent cilia, the authors said.
