Type of macular hole closure affects postop VA
The way a macular hole closes after surgery is associated with postoperative visual prognosis, according to a study. The type of hole closure is influenced by the preoperative hole diameter, the study authors noted. They recommend early diagnosis and intervention for macular holes.
Se Woong Kang, MD, and colleagues at Sungkyunkwan (Korea) University studied 34 eyes of 32 patients who had undergone anatomically successful idiopathic macular hole surgery. Nineteen eyes closed without foveal neurosensory retinal defects (group 1) and 12 closed with foveal neurosensory retinal defects (group 2).
Postoperative visual improvement in group 1 was greater than in group 2. Preop macular hole size in group 2 was larger than in group 1. Recurrence of macular hole occurred only in patients in group 2, the study found.
The study is published in the August issue of British Journal of Ophthalmology.
