"I was fortunate enough to know Dr. Brown," Marguerite B. McDonald, MD, an OSN Refractive Surgery Section Member, said in her acceptance of the Bernice Z. Brown Memorial Lecturer Award. The award is given as a tribute to the qualities exhibited by Dr. Brown, a role model and mentor for women ophthalmologists.

Julia A. Haller, MD, an OSN Retina/Vitreous Section Member, accepted the WIO 2008 Honorary Lecturer award.

Both physicians have in common a history of firsts. Dr. McDonald "did the world's first laser vision correction procedure. She was the first female president of ASCRS and is currently the first female president of ISRS-AAO," Janine Austin Clayton, MD, deputy director of the Office of Research on Women's Health, National Institutes of Health, said in her presentation of the award.

After her education at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Haller did her residency and retina fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she became the first female chief resident in 1986.
