Two combination procedures found to correct superior oblique muscle palsy

Two combination procedures were effective in correcting unilateral congenital superior oblique muscle palsy, a study found.

Data were evaluated in 38 cases in which a combination myectomy with concomitant disinsertion of the inferior oblique muscle procedure was performed and 10 cases in which a combination myectomy with concomitant disinsertion of the inferior oblique and recession of the superior rectus muscle in the ipsilateral eye procedure was performed. Preoperative and postoperative vertical deviation values were compared, along with overall surgical result.

In patients who underwent myectomy with concomitant inferior oblique disinsertion, 74% experienced an excellent outcome, 21% experienced a good outcome and 5% experienced a poor outcome. In patients who underwent myectomy with concomitant inferior oblique disinsertion and ipsilateral superior rectus recession, 50% experienced an excellent outcome, 20% experienced a good outcome and 30% experienced a poor outcome. In both procedures, a statistically significant difference in preoperative and postoperative deviation values was observed (P < .001 for both).

"Our study results show that myectomy and concomitant inferior oblique disinsertion or myectomy and concomitant inferior oblique disinsertion and superior rectus recession of ipsilateral eye are effective, convenient, reliable and successful methods in patients with unilateral congenital superior oblique muscle palsy," the study authors said
