ROCHESTER, Minn. — Transpupillary thermotherapy seems to be effective for the treatment of small choroidal melanomas, according to a study.

Colin McCannel, MD, and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic analyzed data from 20 patients with choroidal melanoma who underwent transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) in 1996 and 20 patients who underwent the same treatment between 1999 and 2002.

Of the original 20 patients, 16 showed no recurrence after an average 57 months of follow-up. Three patients in the original group needed between one and three additional treatments of TTT and the fourth had continued tumor growth that necessitated radiation therapy, according to a press release.

The second group had similar results, the Mayo Clinic said in the release. Two patients in the second group required additional treatment, three others did not respond to TTT. Of the non-responders, two underwent enucleation and one underwent radiation therapy.

The study is published in the April issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.
