Trypan blue staining may aid more complete ILM dissection
Trypan blue staining of the internal limiting membrane may allow more complete dissection of the membrane and better surgical and visual outcomes, according to researchers at the University of Montreal.
Manuel Perrier, MD, and Mikael Sebag, MD, conducted a retrospective review of 18 patients who underwent a three-port pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane delamination using trypan blue 0.06%.
The median preoperative visual acuity was 20/200. Postop, the median visual acuity was 20/70. All but one macular hole was closed after surgery. At last follow-up, 10 patients had improved visual acuity of at least two chart lines.
The study is published in the June issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
