Triamcinolone acetonide may treat CME

HEIDELBERG, Germany — Intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide was successful in treating long-standing cystoid macular edema caused by central retinal vein occlusion in a patient treated here.

Researchers at the university eye clinic treated a 70-year-old patient who had central retinal vein occlusion in one eye for 2 years and in the other eye for 1.5 years. Both eyes received transconjunctival intravitreal injection of 25 mg of crystalline triamcinolone acetonide, with 10 weeks between injections.

In 4 months of follow-up, visual acuity increased from 0.05 to 0.25 in the right eye. In the left eye, with a follow-up period of 6 weeks, visual acuity improved from 0.125 to 0.25. Fluorescein angiography showed a decrease of fluorescein leakage in the macular area.

The case report is published in Graefe's Archive of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
