A toric phakic IOL safely and effectively corrected high myopic astigmatism in Asian eyes, a study showed.

Study results for the fourth-generation Visian Toric Implantable Collamer Lens (STAAR Surgical) were similar to those of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration clinical trial with non-Asian eyes, the study authors said.

"In Asian countries, TICLs are gaining popularity but remain a distant second to LASIK for the operative treatment of refractive error among surgeons and patients," they said. "However, for highly myopic eyes, implantable Collamer lenses provide better visual outcomes compared with laser refractive surgery."

The prospective, nonrandomized clinical study included 44 eyes of 29 patients with 6 D to 18.25 D of myopia and 1 D to 4.5 D of astigmatism.

Primary outcome measures were uncorrected visual acuity, manifest refraction, best corrected visual acuity and postoperative complications. Patients underwent follow-up examination for up to 1 year.

The 6-month results showed that 70.59% of eyes had UCVA of 20/20 or better and 94.12% had UCVA of 20/25 or better. Postoperative UCVA equaled or exceeded preop BCVA in 68.57% of eyes.

Mean refractive cylinder was reduced from 2.64 D before surgery to 0.59 D after surgery; 91.43% of eyes had a reduction in astigmatism of 1 D or more. At 6 months, 60% of eyes were within 0.5 D of targeted cylinder, the authors said.
