ROME — The toric Artiflex shows good, stable results at 3 years in a multicenter European study, according to one surgeon speaking here.

"Using Visante OCT, we are now able to calculate preoperatively all the spaces in relation to the lens and accurately select our patients," Camille Budo, MD, said at the annual joint meeting of Ocular Surgery News and the Italian Society of Ophthalmology.

The Artiflex is implanted like a classic Artisan (both from Ophtec), but with the claws positioned exactly on the site of preoperative astigmatism.

Of the 65 eyes included in the study, 77% were within 0.5 D of intended correction and 97% within 1 D. In 92%, deviation from emmetropia was less than 0.5 D and in 100% was less than 1 D. Mean cylinder decreased from 2.2 D preop to 0.35 D at 3 years postop.

"Stability is great. The results obtained at day 1 were the same at 3 years. We had a two-line gain in about 60% and two lines of loss in 2.5%, due to the development of giant cells postoperatively," Dr. Budo said.

The lens is safe on the endothelium, and no lens-related cell loss occurs if preoperative indications are respected, he said. No IOP changes were reported.
