Topography useful in IOL calculations after refractive surgery

Determining the central corneal refractive power in IOL exchanges or implantation with a diagnostic analysis increases the likelihood of an acceptable refractive outcome, according to a study.

Mark Packer, MD, and colleagues retrospectively reviewed the charts of 20 eyes of 14 patients who underwent cataract extraction with IOL implantation or refractive lens exchange after radial keratotomy, hexagonal keratotomy or laser thermal keratoplasty. The study authors used the effective refractive power of the Holladay Diagnostic Summary on the EyeSys Corneal Analysis System to determine the central corneal refractive power.

Of the 20 eyes, 80% achieved a postop spherical equivalent refraction within 0.5 D of emmetropia.

The study is published in the July issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
