Topography-guided ablation improved vision after decentered LASIK

Topography-guided customized ablation improved uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity in a small study of patients with decentered LASIK ablations.

George D. Kymionis, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Crete in Greece prospectively studied 11 eyes of nine patients who underwent topographically supported customized ablation (TOSCA) for decentered ablations following LASIK. A corneal topographer was used to design a customized ablation, which was carried out with a flying-spot excimer laser. Mean follow-up was 9.22 months.

No intra- or postoperative complications were observed. A statistically significant reduction in refractive astigmatism was found and mean uncorrected visual acuity improved significantly at last follow-up. Eccentricity also showed a statistically significant reduction after TOSCA treatment.

The study is published in the May issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
