Application of topical cyclosporine A resulted in statistically significant improvements in patients with dry eye, a study found.

The single-center, prospective study evaluated 45 patients, 40 women and 5 men, with tear production deficiency who were treated with Restasis (cyclosporine A ophthalmic emulsion 0.005%, Allergan) twice daily and Tears Naturale Free lubricant eye drops (Alcon) five times daily.

Patients were evaluated at baseline and at 6 months after treatment for Schirmer test results, tear breakup time and impression cytology.

Prior to treatment, the median Schirmer test score was 3 mm, compared with 4 mm 6 months after treatment with cyclosporine A. The median tear breakup time was 4 seconds at baseline, increasing to 5 seconds after treatment. The mean cytological grade of disease was 1.84 at baseline, decreasing to 1.51 after treatment.

The clinical and cytological improvements demonstrated in this study correlate with numerous studies establishing the benefits of cyclosporine A for patients with dry eye, the study authors said.
