Three tonometry systems have similar repeatability, reproducibility results for IOP measurement

While Goldmann applanation tonometry had slightly higher intraobserver repeatability in IOP measurement when compared with two other tonometry measurements, all three had similar intersession reproducibility, a study found.

The study looked at 120 eyes of 60 subjects who had been diagnosed with ocular hypertension, glaucoma suspect, primary open-angle glaucoma or normal pressure glaucoma.

Two measurements of IOP were taken about 15 minutes apart using Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT), Pascal Dynamic Contour Tonometer (DCT, Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems) and Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA, Reichert).

One to two examiners took the sets in random examiner sequences. First, ORA was measured in both eyes and then either DCT or GAT measurements were taken.

"Although some intermethod variability differences were identified, all three methods in this study demonstrated clinically acceptable measurement repeatability and reproducibility," the authors said. "This result, in conjunction with the finding that variability was not different between eyes, examiners or measurement sets, suggests that DCT and ORA are reliable enough to be clinically useful."
