ThinOptX receives CE mark in Europe

NICE, France — The ThinOptX IOL received CE-Mark approval on Monday, allowing the 1.5-mm insertable lens to be officially marketed throughout Europe, the company announced here.

The news of the IOL’s recent approval took attendees by storm as they gathered here for the meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

“I am very excited about this news because now everyone in Europe will have the advantage of working through sub-3 millimeter incisions for cataract surgery,” Jorge Alio, MD, told Ocular Surgery News. Dr. Alio has been largely involved in the European trials for ThinOptX, and he has been very pleased with the results.

J. Charles Casebeer, MD, said “I agree, this is very exciting news. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us all. This lens is like no other available.”

According to ThinOptX, the IOL's marketer, this IOL is the first “thin lens” approved for clinical use and it can retain the optical quality of popular, thicker IOLs while folding through an incision of 1.5 mm.
