Arcuate keratotomy using the Terry Astigmatome was found to be safe and effective for treating patients with corneal astigmatism, according to a Turkish study.
Mehmet Baykara, MD, and colleagues at the Uludag University School of Medicine in Bursa used the Terry Astigmatome, from Oasis Medical, to perform arcuate keratotomy in 16 eyes of 11 patients with astigmatism. Mean age of the patients was 36 years.
The mean corneal astigmatism was 4 D preoperatively and 1.8 D postoperatively. The mean surgically induced corneal astigmatism was 2.5 D. Mean uncorrected visual acuity was 0.74 preoperatively and 0.18 at 1 week postop. Mean best corrected visual acuity remained the same from preop to postop. No complications were noted.
The study is published in the December issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
