Technique results in no recurrence, limited complications in recurrent pterygium cases

Ophthalmology. 2009;116(7):1278-1286.

The PERFECT for pterygium surgical technique achieved good results in a case series of recurrent pterygia.

PERFECT stands for pterygium extended removal followed by extended conjunctival transplant.

"In this series, PERFECT for pterygium resulted in a zero recurrence rate (two patients lost to follow-up) with few complications and a good cosmetic appearance," study author Lawrence W. Hirst, MD, MPH, said.

The study examined 111 patients who underwent modification of conjunctival autograft surgery by a single surgeon. Follow-up was 1 year. Patients were rated for recurrence, complications and cosmesis.

The technique resulted in no recurrence in the 109 patients followed to 1 year. Regarding complications, one patient had an exotropia that did not need treatment, and one patient lost four lines of vision from a corneal ulcer.
